Qereçoxê Martyrs Memorial is a witness of Turkish occupation barbarism against NE, Syria
Seven years after the first air attack by the Turkish occupation army, the place that was attacked was restored and a memorial was placed there for the 20 martyrs of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
The attack on Mount Qereçoxê on April 25, 2017 was the first air attack by the Turkish occupation state on North and East Syria, as 26 warplanes participated in the attack on the region and Şengal.
Qereçoxê Mountain is distinguished by its important geographical location located in the border triangle between Turkey, Syria and Iraq, and is distinguished by its richness in underground resources. The General Command of the People’s Protection Units and the Women’s Protection Units took the mountain as its headquarters, and opened the first Rojava radio station above it in April 2013.
A squadron of Turkish occupation state aircraft violated Syrian airspace and bombed the command center of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the media center in Qereçoxê. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of 20 people, including male and female leaders, male and female fighters from the People’s Protection Units and the Women’s Protection Units, including media professionals, as well as nineteen others were seriously injured.
In parallel with the attack, Turkish occupation army aircraft also penetrated Iraqi airspace and bombed various areas of the Şengal Mountains, killing six citizens and wounding 10 others, and the attack caused massive destruction to the infrastructure.
Given the timing, the attack occurred while the Syrian Democratic Forces were engaged in fighting ISIS mercenaries in Tabqa as part of the “Wrath of the Euphrates” campaign.
Since the first attack on April 25, 2017, Syrian airspace has been open to the aircraft of the Turkish occupation state, and after the occupation of Afrin, Serêkaniyê and Girê Spi, the occupying state has followed a different strategy, and is fighting the people of the region for their livelihood, by destroying their infrastructure and service facilities.
The Turkish occupation state has resorted to expanding its war against the peoples of the region since October 19, 2022, by targeting infrastructure, as the targets during this year alone amounted to 17,596 attacks between land and air.
Among them, the Turkish occupation launched 120 attacks against the region with drones, and raided 43 times with military aircraft, leading to the martyrdom of 59 citizens, including 12 children and 5 women, while the number of casualties reached 263, including 59 children and 44 women, according to statistics from the media center of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
In 2023, the Turkish occupation state launched two violent attacks on North and East Syria. The first attack occurred in October, and the second attack occurred in January.
The total number of attacks by the Turkish occupation army during the year 2023 reached 798 targets, including 103 attacks by military aircraft, drones and suicide bombers on the area, which led to the martyrdom of 39 citizens, including 11 children, and the injury of 83 others, including 5 children.
The drones did not hesitate to target fuel, electricity, and water stations, warehouses, industrial facilities, construction companies, and hospitals, as the number of civilian facilities and oil infrastructure centers that were targeted by the Turkish occupation aircraft reached 74 facilities, and the material losses amounted to one billion dollars.
The Turkish occupation launched another violent attack in 2024, starting on January 13, 2024. The targeting by drones and warplanes affected 80 sites, targeting infrastructure and service and economic institutions, destroying the electricity generation facility, water and oil stations, and injuring 7 citizens.
Observers believe that the Turkish occupation state is deliberately targeting infrastructure and service facilities, to displace the population of the region and kill life there, taking advantage of the Gaza war and the tensions in the Red Sea.
The Autonomous Administration restored the place that was subjected to the air attack for the first time, despite some traces of destruction, and turned the place into a memorial for the martyrs fighting from the People’s Protection Units and the Women’s Protection Units, including pictures of the 20 martyrs.
In fulfillment of this day, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria declared April 25 of each year as Martyrs’ Day.
