ISIS mine explosion kills 16 truffle pickers
At least 16 truffle pickers were killed today as a result of a mine explosion in a small truck transporting them in the northern countryside of Raqqa, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in an incident that has been repeated recently.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the truck carried more than twenty people while they were searching for truffles.
Over the past few weeks, deaths have occurred repeatedly as a result of mine explosions, as residents devote themselves to collecting truffles from vast desert areas, to which ISIS mercenaries retreated after they were defeated from their last strongholds in 2019.
18 people were killed as a result of an ISIS attack on truffle collectors in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor on March 6, according to SOHR.
14 truffle pickers were killed on February 25 as a result of the explosion of a mine left by ISIS in the Raqqa desert.
Despite the risks, residents continue to collect truffles because they are sold at a high price, which explains the demand for collecting them in light of the difficult economic conditions afflicting Syria after 13 years of crisis.
