WHO declared Corona as "global pandemic"

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the new coronavirus which is spreading around the world a "global pandemic", but stressed that it can still be "controlled".

According to the organization, the number of HIV infections outside China has doubled 13 times in the past two weeks, and the number of countries hit by the epidemic has tripled.

Tidros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization said at a press conference in Geneva: "We are very concerned about the alarming expansion levels and severity, as well as about the alarming levels of non-movement in the world.

He added: "Covid-19 can now be categorized as a pandemic. We have never seen a pandemic caused by the Coronavirus."

The WHO director-general emphasized: "The characterization of the situation as a pandemic does not change the assessment of the threat posed by the Coronavirus. This does not change what the World Health Organization is doing, nor does it change what countries have to do."

The director-general stressed the necessity of adopting a more strict approach, while reassuring that the pandemic can be "controlled."
