The United States plans to include Iran's Revolutionary Guards on its list of "terrorist organizations" in a move that would greatly increase pressure on the paramilitary force, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
"The United States will announce this decision on Monday," the newspaper said, quoting unnamed administration officials.
According to the newspaper, the US military and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) question the feasibility of this action, which has a very symbolic implications for the Trump administration.
The Pentagon and the CIA are also concerned about the possible repercussions of this action on US troops deployed in the region.
Washington has stepped up economic pressure on Iran since President Donald Trump decided last year to withdraw from a nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the major powers in 2015.
