US Senator: Erdogan practicing ethnic cleansing against Kurds; threatening security of the region

The head of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Elliot Engle, criticized Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing it of carrying out an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Kurds in northern and eastern Syria, believing that Ankara's actions in the region would place its security at great risk.

“Turkish President Erdogan launched a bloody ethnic cleansing campaign against the Syrian Kurds in northern and eastern Syria. Now, the Arab-Syrian and Turkmen refugees are being forced to resettle them in formerly Kurdish northeast Syria,” Engel said.

In his statement, Engel also considered that what Turkey is doing is immoral and unjust, and contradicts international humanitarian law, which calls for the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of the displaced persons.

"What Turkey is doing is proof that it is the legitimate representative of instability in the region."

As Engel criticized President Trump for his relationship with Erdogan, he pointed out that Erdogan contributed to the spread and bloodshed and terrorism in the region.

"We cannot stand by while Erdogan is carrying out an ethnic cleansing in northeastern Syria against the Syrian Kurds, and we must continue to support the Syrian refugees and their rights," he added.

Engel called Erdogan for an immediate end to resettlement.
