US-Russian talks begin, both sides stress importance of improving relations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo, held talks ahead of their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I am here today because President Trump is committed to improving relations," Pompeo said during talks with his Russian counterpart. "Improving relations between the two countries is essential for the benefit of the whole world," he said.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is ready to establish constructive relations with the United States if Washington is ready.

The Kremlin has made it clear that Pompeo will meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov before the Russian president meets them.
