Trump threatens to destroy Turkey's economy

In a new statement contradicting its predecessor, US President Donald Trump pledged to "destroy Turkey's economy if it takes any step "beyond the borders" in Syria.

"As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off-limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of the great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!" Trump said in two tweets posted on his official Twitter account on Monday.

Trump had made a similar threat to Turkey on January 13, 2019, during U.S. preparations to withdraw its troops from Syria by a decision announced by the U.S. president on December 19, and then faced fierce opposition from broad ranks in U.S. policy.
