Trump does not rule out a military confrontation with Iran, calls for negotiations

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was not ruling out a military confrontation with Iran, calling on the regime there to sit down to negotiate a new nuclear deal.

"We cannot rule out a military confrontation with Iran," Trump told reporters.

"The Iranian leaders should contact me and sit down to talk to conclude a good agreement that will help them get out of their economic crisis," he said.

The United States announced a few days ago that it was sending an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the Persian Gulf for what it called a new threat from Tehran.

Earlier, Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford said the decision to send the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to the Persian Gulf was "to deter the Iranian threat in the region."
