Pompeo: Talks between Turkey, US led to "important progress"

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said talks between the United States and Turkey earlier this week had led to "important progress" towards establishing a security mechanism in northern and eastern Syria.

Pompeo tweeted , "Pleased that talks between Turkey and U.S. led to important progress towards establishing sustainable security mechanism to address our shared security concerns in Northeast Syria. Establishing  a safe zone would be a big step towards achieving peace and security.

Turkey announced on Wednesday after three days of talks between Turkish and US military leaders, reached an agreement on the establishment of a so-called "safe zone" in northern and eastern Syria, while the Pentagon said they had reached a security mechanism in the region, and the formation of a joint operating room in Turkey.

The details of the agreement are still vague, and residents of northern and eastern Syria, living in one of the safest areas in Syria since the crisis began in 2011 reject any agreement to which they are not a party.
