Pompeo arrives in Israel on a lightning visit to meet Netanyahu

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Israel this morning on a lightning visit, during which he will hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Iran and the plan to annex parts of the West Bank by Israel.

During the visit, Pompeo will discuss the proposed Israeli steps regarding land in the West Bank, where he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as with his coalition partner, Benny Gantz.

"We also hope that we will be able to convince the Palestinian leadership that it must engage with the Israelis on the basis of the vision of peace launched by President Donald Trump," Pompeo said in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Hume.

Netanyahu intends to take oath and his new coalition government on Thursday, and the government's agenda includes the possibility of declaring sovereignty over the "Jewish" settlements and the Jordan Valley in the West Bank, which means annexing these lands to Israel.

The US-backed peace talks collapsed in 2014.
