Netherlands prepares a lawsuit against Damascus for human rights violations

The Netherlands announced that it is preparing a lawsuit against the Damascus government for human rights violations, torture, and the use of chemical weapons.

Netherlands Foreign Minister Steve Block said in a letter to Parliament on Friday, reported by Reuters, that his country is preparing a case in the highest court in the United Nations against the government of Damascus, and this case, according to the letter, will seek to hold the government of President Bashar al-Assad accountable for human rights violations including torture and the use of chemical weapons.

The agency said, that Damascus was informed of the legal step.

Block added, "The Netherlands announced today its decision to hold Syria responsible for gross violations of human rights and torture in accordance with international law."

The letter cites Syria's commitment to support the United Nations Convention against torture, which Damascus ratified in 2004.
