Macron meets Haftar in Paris

The French President Emmanuel Macron and French senior officials received on Monday the leader of the Libyan National Army, the Marshal Khalifa Haftar, in the capital, Paris.

The Information Office of the General Command of the Libyan Army said that Haftar arrived at the Elysee Palace on Monday morning at an official invitation from Macron to discuss the latest developments of combating terrorism and the file of illegal immigration.

The Information Office added: "The French presidency organized an official reception in the presence of the French president, the chief of staff of the French army, the Defense and Interior ministers of the French government, and a number of military leaders in the French army."

According to the office, the French president praised the pivotal role that the Libyan army plays in supporting counter-terrorism operations, stressing its "full support" for those efforts to achieve stability in the entire region.

On the other hand, Haftar met with the French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on the sidelines of his official visit to Paris.

France is seeking to re-engage in the Libyan affairs as a mediator to resolve the crisis that has hit the country since 2011, and has escalated recently with the control of Extremist militias of the Accord government in the capital, Tripoli.
