İmamoğlu takes up his duties officially as mayor of Istanbul

Istanbul Mayor Akram Emamoglu officially took office Thursday afternoon at a ceremony in the city's municipality, attended by a large number of his supporters.

The candidate of the Republican People's Party today received the document of the Greater Istanbul Municipality, to formally receive the presidency of the municipality, after his victory in the repeated elections this week.

The results of Sunday's elections showed a great victory for İmamoğlu, 49, and the opposition candidate received 53.69 percent of the votes, compared to 45.4 percent for Binali Yildirim, after more than 95 percent of the votes were counted.

The results are a blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who pressed the Supreme Electoral Commission to re-vote in the city, which was the electoral reservoir of the ruling party, the Justice and Development Party, after its candidate's loss.
