Gants elected president of Israeli Knesset

The Israeli Knesset members on Thursday elected the leader of the "Blue White" coalition, Benny Gants, a key rival of outgoing, Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as speaker of the council.

After his election, Gants called for a joint emergency government between him and his rival Netanyahu.

Gantz was the only candidate to succeed Netanyahu's ally, Yuli Edelstein, who resigned under pressure on Wednesday.

Gants voted for 74 Knesset members and 18 against him out of a total of 120.
