France kills al-Qaeda leader in al-Maghreb

French Defense Minister Florence Barley announced that French forces killed the leader of al-Qaeda in al-Maghreb, Abdelmalek Droukdel in northern Mali.

"On June 3, French military forces, with the support of local partners, killed Amir of al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, Abdelmalek Droukdel, and several of his closest aides during an operation in northern Mali," Barley said on Twitter.

The minister described the operation as a "brilliant and necessary success for security and stability in the region."

Abdel-Malik Droukdel, nicknamed "Abu Musab Abdel-Wadoud", was the Amir of al-Qaeda in al- Maghreb, previously known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat.
