France considers idea of joining Middle East Gas Forum

Egyptian sources reported that France is considering the idea of joining the Middle East Gas Forum, which is based in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The French-language newspaper "Gas and Oil" said the forum invited French Ambassador to Egypt Stephan Roumtier to attend the second meeting of the forum.

Roumtier was quoted as saying that talks were under way on the accession of Paris to the forum, referring to negotiations conducted by his country with Egypt and other countries in the eastern Mediterranean for the import of gas.

The gas forum was announced last January in Egypt and includes seven countries, in addition to: Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece and Italy.

The announcement of the Forum is an opportunity for the Mediterranean countries to achieve greater cooperation for their benefit, especially with large gas reserves in the region, estimated at 122 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
