America officially withdraws from 1987 Nuclear Treaty with Russia

The United States formally withdrew on Friday from an important nuclear-weapons treaty it had signed with Russia after it found Moscow was violating the treaty and did not intend to comply with it.

Senior US administration officials told reporters that President Donald Trump had taken a decision to end the United States' commitment to the 1987 Mid-Term Nuclear Power Treaty.

The treaty prohibits both sides from developing short or medium-range missiles launched from land in Europe. Six months ago, Washington indicated its intention to withdraw from the treaty if Russia did not act to comply.
