The water of the river has been polluted after the Turkish occupation state has blocked more than half of the agreed amount on the Syrian lands, since the end of last January, so that the water has become unsuitable for human and even animal use.

The stagnation of the river’s water and the lack of its flow caused an intensification of the impact of toxic organisms in it, which increased the leakage of sewage into the riverbed, especially in the towns of Al-Susah and Al-Baghouz, which are located in the far eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor on the Iraqi border, the last point of the Euphrates River in Syria.

The administrator in the Health Committee in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, Maryam Al-Awad, warned of the aggravation of the disaster after cases of poisoning as a result of drinking contaminated water were registered, especially since the majority of residents bring the water used in their daily lives directly from the river without sterilization.

Al-Awad added, warning of more dangerous diseases and epidemics if the situation continues this way, and explained that the river, which was the source of life in the region, is now a source of danger.

She called on the international community to act immediately and put pressure on the Turkish state, and bear the consequences of the situation in the region.

In turn, the administrator in the Drinking Water Sterilization Unit in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, Abdul Majeed Al-Latif, highlighted the high level of salinity in the water of the Euphrates River, adding that some toxic organism appeared in its water after analyzing samples of it, confirming that the river's water has become unfit for human, animal or even for agriculture use.

Al-Latif confirmed that the leakage of sewage water, industrial and chemical plant materials, into the river, gave it a yellowish color with the spread of unpleasant odors, as a result of the stagnation of water for a long time, which also caused the spread of nitrogen, phosphorus and mercury.

Regarding the sterilization of drinking water, Al-Latif explained that most of the filtering stations were out of service due to the low level of the river's water level, in addition to the sterilization units (CSMs), which are the most important stages of sterilization in which pure water particles are separated; It is constantly and rapidly disrupted due to the high level of pollution in the waters of the Euphrates, which complicates the problem.
